The Fieldbus Raven

This poem is written in the style of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven about a dream (really) I had at an ISA show....

This is NOT meant to indicate that I, personally, am against Fieldbus/SP-50. It simply represents my own, personal view of the paradoxical and 'political' situation that exists in the Industrial Automation business.

Once upon an ISA dreary, while I plodded weak and weary,
O’er yet another boring dreary, showing of forgotten lore
While I plodded nearly dropping, suddenly there was I a stopping
At a rather big booth slopping, right there on the ISA floor
"Tis only a mirage!" I muttered, plopping right there at their door
'Twas only this and nothing more.

The big guys had all got together, just like birds of a same feather
Sheltered in the stormy weather, something never seen before
They had simply all agreed on, all of them just took the lead on
A fieldbus spec that all could feed on, in that booth there on the floor
"How can this ever be?" I stuttered, "I can’t believe this any more!
It cannot be, or can it though?"

Ah, distinctly I remember, it was then in mid-September,
And each and every ISA member, was also right there at the show
They too came to see this wonder, flash of brilliance, lightning, thunder
The other specs soon cast asunder, and SP-50 all aglow!
"This can’t really be!" I uttered, sitting down to see some more
And I was shaken to the core

Presently my soul grew stronger, hesitating then no longer,
"Sir," said I, " or Madam, truly, your forgiveness I implore!
Is this fieldbus really something? An open fieldbus common chum thing?
An all together they have come thing? Please, please will you tell me more?"
With amazement my heart fluttered, they had a fieldbus spec. to show!
They finally had something more!

I deep into that booth was peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, shouting, hoping, cheering, dreaming dreams ne’er dreamed before!
But then the spell was really broken, and the truth was clearly spoken
‘Cause then quite simply I awoken, right there at the ISA show
My dream just fizzled out and sputtered, and I wandered sadly off the floor
‘Twas just a dream and nothing more
